Most
mornings when I go jogging/ walking, I always get curious stares from people. A
neighbour even confronted me and asked
why I exercise since I’m not fat (I barely weigh 50kg). So I’m just going to
address the issue of exercise once and for all!
First
of all, exercise does not have a particular weight class. Humans are mobile
beings and when we start to live sedentary lives, our body tells us to stop by
exhibiting conditions like obesity and the rest. So anybody can exercise; in fact,
everybody should! So let’s take a look at some of the reasons I think you
should exercise.
- It’s good for your body
Apart
from the obvious fact that exercising helps you stay in shape and maintain a
healthy weight, it can also reduce blood pressure and help protect you against
a heart attack. Aerobic exercise will help you breathe better as it helps your
heart and lungs function more efficiently. Furthermore, exercising can delay
the development of osteoporosis because your bones are kept strong. Exercise
can also help alleviate headaches. Exercising three or more times in a week
will help improve blood sugar level and fitness. Regular exercising will boost
your endurance and boost your muscle strength. Exercises help to deliver oxygen
and nutrients to your tissues.
- It reduces stress
Feeling
a little stressed out after a hard day’s work? Exercising can help you reduce
stress. It doesn’t just fix your stress related issues for a short term;
exercising regularly can help you deal with stress long-term. Nothing makes stress
disappear faster than a good aerobic workout. It helps to work off the
frustrations and anger associated with being stressed out, keeping you in a
positive frame of mind. Furthermore, people who exercise regularly suffer less
from stress and have less stress-related
illness than those who do not exercise regularly.
- It reduces anxiety and depression
Exercising
gives your body a good boost of endorphin also known as the “feel good”
hormone. This will greatly improve your mood and make you happier. People who
are depressed tend to be reluctant to move their bodies. Aerobic exercise is a
perfect distraction from the sadness. Plus it will boost your confidence, a
significant requirement to overcome depression. If you are a bit overweight,
the benefits of exercise include weight loss which will make you feel better
about yourself and improve your self-esteem.
- It helps you sleep better
Exercising
regularly can help you sleep better. Exercising has been proven to dramatically
improve the sleep patterns in people. So if you need a little help with going
to sleep at night, exercising can help!
The
benefits of exercising are numerous so if you haven’t already started, you need
to start today! Initially, starting an exercise regime might not be easy. You may
find yourself making excuses or giving up because you are not seeing immediate benefits
but if you continue and don’t give up, not only will you reap the benefits but
also you will become acutely aware anytime you aren't exercising because it would have become part of your daily routine.
Any day you don’t exercise, you will actually miss it.
