In
my previous post, I talked about emergencies. what they are
are and what to do when you find yourself in an emergency situation. I’m going
to share some things that you should always have in your emergency kit which will come in
handy if you find yourself in an emergency.
- Means of identification
This
is not always included in the list by people but it is perhaps the most
important thing to have on you. If you have ever found yourself in an emergency
situation, you will realise that this is
perhaps one of the first things first responders want to see. Always carry with
you a valid I.D and showing your blood type and if you are allergic to any
medication, always have something on you that clearly states it. This can mean
the difference between life and death. If you have children, make sure they
always have a means of I.D and an emergency contact on them before they leave
the house.
- Car emergency kit
Always
include Items like flashlights, first aid kit, an extra tire, fire extinguisher, battery operated radio, money
including small change, blankets, candles and a lighter in your emergency kit. This
is important if you are planning to go on a road trip or camping in the
woods.
- In-house emergency pack
Emergencies
like hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes
can hit suddenly often cutting off many homes from means of communication and
preventing them from reaching out for help. It is important to be prepared if
you live in an area prone to this natural phenomena. Keep one gallon of water
per person per day and have enough that can last for approximately 3-4 days. Make
sure you have at least three days’ worth of non-perishable foods that require
no cooking. Have a battery-operated radio and a LED flashlight plus extra
batteries handy. Include a first aid kit plus important medications that
members of the family need with copies of prescriptions. Adding a whistle to
the collection is also a great idea.
- Documents
Always
have copies of relevant documents such as insurance, contact numbers, and addresses, passport etc. in your emergency
kit. Spare keys to every door in your house or car should also be included. This
will come in handy if you are trapped and need to get out of the house.
Finally,
the key to putting together and properly utilising
your emergency kit is placing it in strategic locations.do not place your
emergency kits in hard-to-reach places of your house and car. Remember, you
need them for emergencies, therefore, they should be easily accessible.
